Let’s Talk About Desert Flower — The Book That Touched My Heart
This book is based on a true story — the life of Waris Dirie. She was born into a poor family in Somalia. As a child, she helped her family by raising camels. When she was five, she had a crush on a Somali boy.
In Somalia, there was a tradition of cutting girls’ genitals at an early age. Many Somali men believed that women who weren’t cut were disgusting and that only cut women were good. Little Waris thought her crush would like her if she became a “cut” woman. So she kept begging her mother to let her undergo the procedure.
Eventually, her mother took her to a woman who performed genital mutilations, and that woman cut five-year-old Waris.
When Waris turned twelve, her father tried to marry her to a sixty-year-old man in exchange for five camels. Waris didn’t want to marry him, so she decided to run away from home.
What happens next is something you’ll discover when you read the book. Her story is incredibly emotional and teaches us to be grateful. It shows how much we already have in our lives to appreciate — and honestly, after reading it, you stop complaining about the little things.
